Falls Downtown to Flood Freo Streets with Life

Words: Cam Hurst

It’s sometimes easy in the tepid horror of mid-Monday to forget about how much GOOD STUFF is happening in Perth this summer. I just got back from travelling for 8 months and spent 5 hours in my childhood bedroom sending my terrible resume to hospitality jobs I don’t want whilst scrolling past Kermit memes to reach Buzzfeed quizzes about my chocolate preferences. Grim. But then an ad for Falls Festival popped up! And all is not lost…

In case you missed the line-up release in August, we’re talking Childish Gambino (with no sideshows), London Grammar (also no sideshows) (aka don’t kid yourself you will see these artists anywhere else for at least a year), The Avalanches, Violent Soho, Matt Corby, Ta-ku, The Jezabels, Ball Park Music, Jamie T, Broods, Grandmaster Flash, Illy, , Hot Dub Time Machine, DMA’s, AlunaGeorge, Booka Shade, Client Liaison, Vallis Alps, Parquet Courts, City Calm Down, Modern Baseball, RY X, Lemaitre, Shura, Mt Mountain, Elli Schoen and more.

Plus there’s beer gardens, pop-up bars, food-trucks, a craft market and art installations… all of the cool festival stuff. Also yoga and ‘well-being’, which could mean anything from massages from lean tanned vegans in tight clothing to free hangover remedy juices cleanses.

Back to the music: what a lineup! An American Donald we can be happy about, the most beautiful British croon since Kate Bush, a healthy coverage of scrappy garage punk both international and Aussie, Danish electropop and the Grand Daddy of hip hop as we know it, Grandmaster Flash. Matt Corby is 100% back! He released a full album! And in terms of local talent, Ellie Schoen has paid her dues at Mojos and is showing off Perth songwriting in the big leagues of this festival! Mt Mountain is here! Camp Doogs even have their own show time! Everything is cool!

Byron Bay and Lorne have already sold out, and downtown Freo is obviously next. The only place you want to be on the 7th and 8th of January 2016 is getting elbowed in the face by a Violent Soho fan at Falls. I would suggest taking a look at your most played on Spotify, realizing how closely that coincides with the 2017 Falls Festival Lineup and buying a ticket right now. The Ink Grid will see you there!
